Y'all know that I LOVE having a home to share with my husband. And one of the best parts has been decorating it to make our house feel more like a home. Well something I haven't talked about a lot on here is the cleaning that comes with having your own home.
My mom isn't here to pick up after me anymore (although sometimes I think Thomas thinks a magic fairy comes to pick up after him ;) ), and my cleaning-obsessed-OCD roommate isn't either. SO it's all up to me now. And if I have to do it, well then I might as well make it fun.
And when I figure out something like making housework a little more fun. Then I've got to share it with y'all too. So today I'm sharing my 4 secrets to making cleaning fun....
1. Cleaning Playlist
My cleaning spotify playlist seriously comes in clutch here. Nothing like a little mid-cleaning singing break to loosen up a little and have some fun. Not to mention my Scotch-Brite® Non-Scratch Soap Dispensing Dishwand works as the perfect makeshift microphone.
2. Set a Timer
When my roommate in college and I didn't want to clean (but had to) we would always set an alarm for ten minutes and see how much we could get done in that time frame. There's something fun about trying to race the clock, and surprising satisfying from seeing all that you can do in such a short amount of time.
Is this adulting? Getting excited about cleaning? Lord, help me!
3. Don't do it alone.
Get your husband (or kids) in on the action. Whether you turn it into a game/race or simply have some company and someone to talk to while cleaning it always helps the time and cleaning pass by faster. Now actually getting my husband in on the action is a whole other ballgame... ;)
4. Break it up.
Just like Rome wasn't built in one day, you don't have to clean your entire house in one day either. I think its best to have certain things you do daily (washing dishes, sweeping) and break up everything else throughout the week. That way it doesn't seem like a mile long list that you have to accomplish.
Cleaning will always still be cleaning, but there's no harm in making it a little fun along the way. And luckily, using the right tools will help you get the job done faster, too.
In my experience (aka: our first year of marriage) the Scotch-Brite™ Brand is the right tool for any surface, and using the right product will help you clean more efficiently. If you're not familiar, the green sponges are heavy duty and the blue are non-scratch.
The color coding makes it easy to quickly grab the right sponge for the right mess. While both Scotch-Brite® Sponges clean messes 50% faster than competitive sponges, the Scotch-Brite® Heavy Duty Scrub Sponge (green) is great for not only the kitchen but think out of the box and use it in your garage and outdoors as well. Where as, the Scotch-Brite® Non-Scratch Scrub Sponge (blue) is great for sensitive surfaces that you well don't want to get scratched, haha -- think nonstick cookware, dishes, stovetops and even tubs.
As much as I love a good sponge (that works efficiently so I can work smarter not harder) for cleaning appliances, countertops and the bathroom, when it comes to the dishes I'm more of a dishwand kinda girl. As in, I really don't want to stick my hand in that pot of last nights leftover, now soggy mess. (anyone else or am I a wimp?) So, while the sponges are definitely the star of the show today, the Scotch-Brite® Non-Scratch Soap Dispensing Dishwand (blue) is fantastic for washing dishes seeing as the soap is already in the wand. Less steps for me? AND you know I'm using it as a microphone. ;) Total win/win in my book.
side note: it's a little awkward to be photographed mid-jam session
And of course, if I'm going to give you cleaning tips and rave about my current favorite cleaning tool I'm gonna share a Target Cartwheel offer as well...
