Timmerman Party of 2: Our Wedding Cake

Finally, I'm back with another Wedding Wednesday post.  It's been way too long, but I've just been getting so busy and Wednesday comes and goes before I know it.  So this week, we're talking cake!

We got our cake from a local bakery called Ugga Mugga Bakery.  And right away I knew I wanted to do a small, simple, rustic cake with a dessert bar {more on the dessert bar later}.  You guys tasting the cakes and desserts was THE best.  We ended up going with a bacon maple cake and icing (sans bacon because that just didn't sound too yummy to me) for our wedding cake.
Our baker not only made our beautiful cake and dessert bar, but she also made Thomas' groom's cake.  Y'all it was AMAZING.  But more on that next week, now for the pictures...

Honestly, I was worried about Thomas smashing the cake in my face and it turned out to be no big deal.  And can I just say that I wish I could've had another piece of our cake!  Luckily, she's making us another cake for our anniversary.

Preparing Your Home for Guests in Less Than 30 Minutes

Growing up my brothers and I would always moan and groan when the holidays came around or when friends or family were coming over to visit.  Not because we didn't love seeing them, but because that meant we had to help clean.  We'd complain and throw fits of "why do we have to clean this room, no one will even go in here"  or "they don't care what our house looks like, why do we have to clean it".

And now is the time where I have to say, my mom was right.

I totally get it.  You want your house to be clean and presentable.  You want to be proud of where you live and be able to show it off to your guests.  Luckily, I learned a thing or two (in between the moaning and complaining) from my mom of house to pick up and do a quick cleaning spree in 20 minutes.  Thank you momma. ;)

Now that we've been married and living on our own for almost nine months now (eek!), I've started to get a good cleaning routine down.  Each week I have a set things I like to do to keep our house clean.

But sometimes you've had an extremely busy week or you just don't have enough time to do a thorough deep clean.  Well no worries, with my tips on how to focus on preparing your house for guests, you'll be ready to go in 30 minutes or under.

Set a timer for 10 minutes.  This will help you stay on track and be aware of when your time is halfway up.  Then of course reset your timer for the final 10 minutes.

I recommend doing this even when your not in a time crunch to keep you motivated and on task -- a habit I picked up in college when my roommate and I didn't feel like cleaning.  Clean ten minutes, reward ourselves with a more fun task.  Repeat.

Focus on the rooms that will be seen/used the most.  For us this means the kitchen, living room, bathroom and guest room.  These rooms are where I will spend the most of my time cleaning, and when I'm rushed most likely the only rooms that'll get any attention.

Sweep and Mop.  No one wants to walk around barefoot only to have crumbs and hair stuck to their feet.  Yuck!  Luckily we were gifted a Shark Steam Mop as a wedding gift and it really minimizes the amount of time "mopping" the floors and is great for hardwood floors, too.  This takes a good 10 minutes sweep and anytime remaining at the end of my 30 minutes I'd use to Shark (most visited rooms first).

Clear and Wipe Down all Counters/Tables.  This means putting away any dishes that were hand washed, throwing dirty dishes in the dishwasher (with the help of Finish Jet-Dry Rinse Aid) and moving the mail that tends to pile up on our kitchen counters.  Empty, clean counters just automatically bring a freshness to the kitchen that is welcoming.  Also take this time to wipe down the dining room table, coffee table and side tables.  This should take 5-7 minutes.

As you can see, from the before (above) and the after (below) cleaning off the counters and switching out a new, clean hand towel makes a huge difference.  Lysol All Purpose Cleaner is great for wiping off the counters and disinfecting all in one.  In fact, it cleans 99.9% of all bacteria and how can you pass that up?  Not to mention I love that I can use it in the kitchen AND our next most visited room the bathroom.

Clean the Bathroom.  Wipe down the sink and outside of the toilet using Lysol All Purpose Cleaner.  Give the inside of the toilet a good scrub, and clean off the mirror.  In a pinch this can be done in a solid 5-7 minutes, and with the help of Lysol you can still be guaranteed that it'll still be clean and bacteria free.

Pick up the Living Room.  Fold blankets, clear off cups and other items off of coffee table and side tables.  Vaccuum living room rug and fluff pillow.  This should take 5 minutes max; this is a speed clean after all y'all.

The guest room.  There are two different strategies with this room.  Since Thomas' clothes and shoes are all kept in this room it really takes advanced notice for it to be actually ready for a guest to stay in there.  If the guest is not staying the night the "in a pinch" solution is just to shut the door, which goes for the entire house.  If you don't have time and it's not frequently visited shut the door and be done with it.  If a guest is staying over, I've likely told Thomas to clean up his mess the night before.  Then I will simply make sure the bed is made, pillow cases are on, the wifi password is displayed and the room is welcoming and clean smelling.  Which brings me to my last tip...

Create an inviting smell.  That sounds a little strange (honestly, I don't know how to word it any better).  Butt,  what I mean is turn on your warmers, light some candles, do what ever you need to create a delicious smelling house.  My personal preference?  Wax Warmers.  There's no flame and they tend to be more fragrant filling an entire room with the best smells.  I suggest turning these on 30 minutes before anyone shows up to get the maximum fragrance.

And with the couple minutes I have before my guests show up, I like to relax on the couch and catch up with Snapchat.

And not only do I have the tips to prepare for guests in a pinch, but I have some Target Cartwheel offers to help you save money on the essential cleaning products:  10% off all Lysol Cleaning Products and 5% off all Finish Products.  AND right now the Lysol All Purpose Cleaner is buy 3 get 1 free. ( all running 3/27-5/14)
