Eat Drink & Be Mary: The Do's and Don'ts of Instagram

The Do's and Don'ts of Instagram

Social Media.  Everyone has it these days.  And every blogger should.  Social Media can definitely boost your blogs success.  Plus, "I have to for my blog" is the perfect excuse to put off something productive to scroll through your Instafeed.  #sorrynotsorry

But as a blogger there are "rules" for managing these accounts to benefit you and your blog.  The do's and don'ts.

DO have your blog URL in your profile for easy access.  Instagram still doesn't allow clickable links through your posts, but add a "link in profile" to get followers to access your blog easily.

DONT leave comments only asking people to follow you.  Just don't.  Not cool.

DO use creativity.  Take pictures using different angles, from a different point of view, etc.

DONT comment with #tagsforlikes or #commentforcomment.  That's spammy.  No thank you.

DO use filters and edit your picture.  But don't over do it.  These should enhance your picture not completely change it.

DONT  go to someone's account and like their past 20 pictures, only to not follow them.  Spammy.  If you like that many pictures, follow the account.  It only makes sense.

DO post pictures of babies.  Everyone loves babies.  Pictures of babies get more likes.  FACT.

DONT post more than twice a day.  More than this becomes excessive, and no one wants just one user filling up their entire feed.  Exceptions?  Weddings + Babies (see above.)

DO follow me.  What kinda blogger would I be without a shameless plug?  ;)

DONT only post promotional pictures for your blog/brand.  Post personal pictures as well, readers love to know what happens behind the scenes.

So there you have it.  My ten dos and donts of Instagram, to improve your following.

What would you add to my list?

What is your favorite blog tip?

What other blog related topics would you be interested in reading more about?

Happy Monday my sweet peas.

  1. As a new user of instagram just this year (April) I have quickly learned a lot of these do's and dont's and DEFINITELY agree! One I can add to the list is I can't stand it when I find an account that has majority of pictures as just selfies....Ugh. Can I see some other things besides your face? Please? It might be a bit mean, but just sayin'! Haha. Thanks for this post, it's a good one!

  2. LOVE THIS. You nailed it. I don't enjoy it when an instagrammer fills up my screen, or when I see follow-for-follows... anywhere on social media and especially in blog comments. And I might be shooting myself in the foot by being a blogger who doesn't have a public IG account, but it's the choice I'm making right now. Thankfully that means I only have 13 followers who are friends in real life, so less spam for me:) Oh, and I can only look at so many up-close edited selfies before I get angry!

  3. These are great! But also - don't post a million reposts of giveaway pictures, a few (especially for good giveaways) are fine but when people only post giveaway pictures or post 10 a day it drives me insane!

  4. Very good tips! I agree with all of them!

  5. This is a really good list!

  6. Nice list... I think travels are also another great reason to post more- but I am a 'the more the merrier' person on instagram- it doesn't bother me when people post a lot? maybe I am the oddball, but I love photos and follow lots of bloggers who post throughout the day and I personally love it- esp. if it's a variety.

  7. Great dos and donts! I hate when people post on my pictures asking for me to follow them. Not what Instagram is about

  8. I totally agree with these tips! I get tons of spammy comments or someone who might like 10+ of my photos but not follow!

  9. I definitely agree with a lot of these. Basically don't be a troll!

  10. I hate all the spammy "like for a like" or "follow for a follow" comments! Really? Obviously I am not going to do either if you say that on my photos!

  11. godddddd the follow for follow drives me nuts!

  12. All the babies..and puppies..don't forget the puppies!! I agree with all of these. Such great pointers!

  13. I agree a balance of blog and personal photos are important, babies and cute animals are alway welcomed on the Instafeed. I am not a fan of the follow for follow, I prefer that someone follows simply because they want to and I can choose to follow or not because I want to.

  14. Great list! Glad to say I agree and do/don't do almost all of these things!

  15. Amazing list! I hate when people like your pics and don't follow you. Seriously....
And babies, puppies, weddings and maaabye delicious food can be on the list too. I love to follow those food bloggers.

  16. My instagram was private for most of its life because I mostly just used it for food inspiration. I used my very first hashtag in...March, haha. I'm all for cute animals, delicious food and awesome recipes though! :D! I'm very likely to be the odd one out on this and/or a soulless monster, but generally speaking, I'd take cute animals over babies any day. :x

  17. It drives me CRAZY when someone comes to my page, likes a gazillion pictures but then doesn't follow. Even if I LIKE their account, I purposely DON'T follow them (yes, I'm totally passive aggressive). I only disagree with the baby one. Everyone likes their own kid, but I unfollow if that's all there is. Just not my cup of tea (yes, I'm an awful person).

  18. Definitely not mean! A good mix of your face and everything else is always pleasant to see..haha. Girl I can't believe you just got Instagram, at least you have it now.

  19. Oh follows for follows are my least favorite of all. So annoying! Oh my I can't believe you don't have an Instagram. At least you have a personal one, to still enjoy all the pictures.

  20. I've actually never found an account that does a lot of giveaway pictures, but that doesn't sound fun either. Although I have to admit I love coming across a good giveaway on my feed.

  21. For me it depends on the occasion, if it'll bother me how many pictures they put up. But I do enjoy following the accounts that people "take over", and those accounts are meant for you to share several times during the day. It's a fun peak into their lives.

  22. Not at all and it drives me bonkers. Glad you enjoyed :)

  23. I (thankfully) don't get a lot of spam comments, but I see them all the time. I always find it odd when some one has gone back and liked TONS of my pictures from a while back, but didn't follow me. I'm assuming their hoping I'll follow them? IBut I'm not sure about all that & it doesn't get me to follow them...

    ReplyDelete
  24. Oh gracious I dislike those so much. It makes me wonder how often it really works for them...

    ReplyDelete
  25. Exactly, I'll follow who I want to thank you. I feel like those comments would keep me from following that person because I'd be annoyed.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I love seeing the yummy food pictures as well. Typical Instagram ;)

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm pretty positive I rarely use hashtags right, but I enjoy the app so much. Haha, maybe you are soul-less ;)

    ReplyDelete
  28. I get what you mean of only being able to handle so many of someone's baby, but I'm just such a sucker for them! Haha, you get 'em with your passive agressivness! :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. That is a GREAT list!! I try VERY hard not to get spammy (via the overpost!) but it is typically because of babies/small children so I guess I am safe!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Great list! I agree about the don'ts. I don't get it when someone likes a lot of my pictures but then don't follow me. So weird.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Babies are always good in my book, but there are the (heartless) few that disagree with me. ;) I think it just depends on the occasion and how often you overpost.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The pictures you post of him are seriously THE cutest. If the people ask for more, give him more! I definitely wouldn't complain.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I agree with this post. I love reading and would love to read more about your LDR tips and date ideas as well as new blogger and photography tips!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I love all of these but the post pictures of babies. There are so many creeps on Instagram I just can't stand not knowing who would be looking at my baby. I just can't do it!! Everything else I LOVED :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. WHY is clickable links not yet a thing?! Get with the times insta, bloggers need you!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I know right...I'm not sure what's up with that!
