Eat Drink & Be Mary: The Buzz about Clean Eating

The Buzz about Clean Eating

After being on vacation for the past two weeks, my "good" eating habits have been kicked to the curb and forgotten. But I'm back and ready to get my fitness on & my eating in check too. But I don't know the first thing about eating clean, and I'm willing to bet I'm not the only one. Luckily we have Kayla here with us today to tell us more about eating clean. Take it away Kayla...

“Eating clean” is one of the biggest buzzwords flying around during conversations about nutrition and health. But what does it really mean?

Well, first of all, Cheetos and Skittles are out. Sorry. But delicious, fresh, nutritious vegetables, fruits, whole grain pastas, chocolate, and more are in! Clean eating does not have to mean munching on lettuce leaves. It simply emphasizes choosing fresh, natural foods over packaged, processed ones.

Breakfast can be anything from rolled oats oatmeal to greek yogurt with fresh fruit. Sounds good, right? Clean eating is not deprivation, it’s asking that you trade your morning Pop-Tarts for something that truly nourishes your body.

Lunch can be collard green wraps or brown rice stir fry. For dinner, try baked fish and asparagus. Finish it off with dark chocolate. Do I have your attention now?

Snack can be an avocado with sea salt and fresh squeezed lemon, or a handful of almonds and blueberries. Who doesn’t love avocado?

Buzzfeed recently posted a great program for a two-week healthy eating challenge, which provides a grocery list, recipes and eating plan. Check it out here.

Try a week of clean eating and see how you feel at the end. Scour your local grocery store for fresh produce, or even better, visit a farmers market in your neighborhood. Head over to Local Harvest to discover a farmers market happening close by.

This time of year, farmers markets abound, and there are few weekend activities more fun or relaxing than wandering around a farmers market, finding fresh flowers for your apartment and supporting local businesses at the same time.

  1. It can be totally hard to eat clean, but it is so worth it at the end of the day when I don't feel like crap. Great tips and reminders!

  5. Eating clean can be a real challenge, but I know I feel so much better when I'm eating lots of fruit, veggies, and proteins. I'll have to check out the 2 week plan to get some more ideas for what to eat.

  6. I did this clean eating plan from buzzfeed and really enjoyed it! One of my favorite dish's from there was the fried egg and asparagus salad! It was SO yummy!!

  7. I'm not going to lie, I wasn't totally sure what clean eating was... so I'm glad someone explained it!! Now if I could only figure out what the paleo fuss is all about, ha!

  8. I didn't really know much about what clean eating was. I knew that it meant no Cheetos or skittles, maybe that's why I haven't tried it ha! Interesting post! I'll have to look at the Buzzfeed post. I need to starting eating better for sure.

  9. It's sad that we have to have a phrase for this (or two - real food) when it used to just be called "eating food." I don't know if they called it "not eating crap" back then. Thank you for sharing. Hello from Turn It Up Tuesday.

  10. I've been gradually moving to this over the past years. it is a bit challenging for me as I have allergies towards lots of vegetables and fruits, but I definitely noticed that I have way less skin and other problems when I started to cut out processed food.
