Eat Drink & Be Mary: June 2014

Summer Nutrition for Healthy Skin [+ a giveaway]

It's Summer time y'all. And has been for a a little over a week now. Other than being tan I also love to have glowing skin. Glowing, sun-kissed skin. Don't we all want that?
Luckily we have Jane here to tell us what summertime foods we can eat to keep healthy skin during summer.  We all this talk about getting fit, it is just as important to keep your skin feeling and looking healthy.

Take it away Jane...

I'm a huge seasons person. I love all the seasons and the changes that come in the weather. So seeing that the first "official" day of Summer was hardly a week ago (although it’s already pretty hot here in the South for a while) I’m daydreaming of anything and everything summer. Bring on the beach, the grill, short shorts, good music, and long days.
One of the things that I love about the change of the seasons is the change in seasonal foods. We seem to naturally change our eating habits in the heat of summer. Many of our nutritional needs stay the same, but we tend to reach for lighter and cooler options in the warmer months.
Did you know that some of our favorite summer foods have amazing health benefits for our skin? I mean who doesn’t want healthy and radiant skin.
Here are some of my favorite summer foods with amazing skin benefits:

Avocado// Avocados are like Mother Nature’s moisturizer. Think of how creamy a perfectly ripe avocado is. All of the healthy fatty acids nourish the body from the inside out. Avocados go way beyond guacamole. Slice them into salads, spread onto toast, or make a face mask.
Cucumber// Cucumbers are so cooling and hydrating. They’re low in calories, fat free, and the dark green skin contains fiber and other nutrients. Slice them and eat them raw or place in a pitcher of water with your favorite citrus and herbs for flavored water. Place slices over your eyes and imagine that you are at a luxury spa.
Tomatoes// Tomatoes taste amazing in the summer. They’re rich in lycopene and beta-carotene, both of which boost your skin’s natural defense against sun damage. Tomatoes
Watermelon// Any food that has the word water in it is obvious hydrating. The more hydrated the skin, the healthier and fewer wrinkles. Watermelon is high in Vitamin C, which is required for healthy collagen production.
Berries// All berries are full of Vitamin C and fiber. They’re mainly known for their high level of antioxidants. Keep in mind the deeper the color, the more nutrients.
Pineapple// I’m so obsessed with pineapple. It’s so sweet and juicy. Not only is it full of many Vitamins and minerals but it contains bromelain.
Greens// Loving salads and smoothies right now. Try switching up your greens. If you have been eating winter greens like kale and chard all winter look towards warm weather greens like arugala and dandelion greens. All greens have a long list of health benefits so feel free to change them out seasonally.
Enjoy your summer!
x. jane

Me again. I always knew that what you put in your body effects more than just your weight, but I never knew what foods to eat to make my skin "radiant" as she puts it. And considering my avocado obsession you can bet your bottom dollar that I'll be stuffing my face with them and the other foods in the list. Hello, glowing skin.

And now that you're skins going to be glowing all summer thanks to Jane's great tips, why not make your heart a little happier too? Enter now for the chance to win $25 to Molly Mattin.

Why We Work

Thomas and I have been together for 2 years today.  2 years!  730 days.  Today is a day to celebrate.  Celebrate love and being able to stand each other for this long.  Longer than I've ever been able to stand someone ;)  And I couldn't be happier.  So in the sappy fashion that should come with any anniversary I'm sharing Why We Work.  I mean heck we've lasted this long, something must be working for us.
Then by Brad Paisley on Grooveshark

We work because he's calm and I'm fiery.  We work because he knows my dreams and encourages them.  We work because he makes me laugh even when I don't want to.

We work because I'm an impulse buyer and he likes to think about it for a couple days at least a couple weeks.  Because he taught me how to laugh at myself.

We work because I love his freckles and he likes my curves.  Because he loves to cook and I love his cookin'.

We work because even though I'm the world's worst texter (always having several typos in each text) he still understands what I'm trying to say.

We work because baking is my favorite and he's my biggest fan.  Because he can quote ever movie he has ever seen & I can't even remember the words to my favorite song, on a good day!

Because he lets me take a bazillon pictures and almost never complains.  Because he'll watch chick flicks with me as long as he has a bowl of popcorn and a Coke.  We work because together we can at like kids without a care and easily talk to each other about serious topics.

We work because we share a love for the beach and sunshine.  Because he loves to hunt & fish, and I can read while he does.  We work because he'll bait my hook, hold the shark & then unhook him for me.

We work because he sends me "good morning beautiful" texts and we never go to bed without saying goodnight.  We work because we tell each other "I love you," several times a day.  We work because he knows how I'm feeling just by looking at me.

We work because we work at our relationship.  Because no matter how far away we are from each other there's nobody else I'd rather do life with.  We work because everyday I fall in love all over again, loving him more than the day before.

Happy two years to us.  Now that we're in separate states, I believe I'll celebrate with some chipotle (or frozen yogurt) & a chick flick.  Why do you at your other half work?

28 Verses to Pray for Your Relationship

Earlier this week I shared this post on things I've learned from being in a long distance relationship (after seeing each other everyday in college it is a rough adjustment).  Let me just tell ya, this long distance thing is tough and it takes work.  Hard work.  But mostly it takes a lot of time spent in prayer & trusting God's timing and plan.  And when I asked y'all your advice for a LDR, prayers was the number one answer.

So today I'm sharing with you 28 verses to pray for your relationship.   28 different ways to focus on your relationship and the different aspects it takes for a successful relationship.  With God as the center.  Prayer is a powerful thing my friends.  So why would we not pray for the most important people in our lives?

1 Peter 4:8 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.

1 Corinthians 12: 4-7 4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8Love never fails.

Ephesians 4:2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, baring with one another in love.

John 4:19 We love because He first loved us.

John 15:12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.

1 John 3:18 Let us not love with words or tongue, but with actions and in truth.

Colossians 3:14 Most of all, let love guide your life. // Wear love everywhere you go.
For this verse I found two diffferent translations, but I love them both equally so y'all got both.

Romans 12:9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.

Lord, help me love you foremost, Thomas second, and myself last.  You are the prime example of how love is and how love should be.  Let our love for each other and You never run dry, but continue to grow each day.  Help me take these verses and strive to live them out to the fullest, loving deeply, fully and sincerely.

James 1:19 My dear brothers and sisters, be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to get angry.
Proverbs 14:29 The one who is slow to anger has great understanding, but the one who has a quick temper exalts folly.

Ecclesiastes 7:9 Be not quick in your spirit to become angry, for anger lodges in the bosom of fools.

Colossians 3:8, 12-13 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.

Proverbs 29:11 A fool always loses his temper, But a wise man holds it back.

Lord you know how I am quick to anger, but I know that this is not how you want me to live.  Help me take in the verses, and lean on You to become slow to anger and even quicker to forgive.  I know that when I am quick to anger it is prideful and is not furthering our relationship but preventing it from growing.  Give me the strength to bite me tongue and instead of getting mad easily, clothe me in the fruits of the spirit: patience, forgiveness, humility, and kindness.

Ephesians 4:32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

Matthew 6:14-15 For if you forgive other their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

1 Corinthians 13:5 [Love] keeps no record of wrongs.

Lord help me to forgive Thomas.  But not only to say I forgive him, but to fully and completely forgive keeping no record of wrong.  To where forgiving means forgetting and not holding it against him any longer, ever again.  Help me to remember that you've already forgiven me (and all of mankind) for the greatest sin of all, and if you forgive something much larger then I can forgive smaller things here on Earth.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as your are doing.

Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

Psalm 27:1 The Lord is my light and my salvation whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid?

John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

God give me the words to encourage Thomas, and not to cut him down.  Help me to choose words wisely uplifting him and building him up, and never talking down to him.  Lead us both to you when we are fearful or worried, and know that within You, and not ourselves or the ways of the world, will we find encouragement and strength.

1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

Romas 12:10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.

Matthew 19:6 Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.

In today's world it is easy to falter or stray, but help us both to stay strong and faithful.  Let us cling to each other and Your word when times get tough, not letting this world tempt us.  Lord, keep us faithful to each other, honoring each other above ourselves.

Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Matthew 6:33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your aways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

Phillipians 2:1-6  Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.  5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage.

Lord, you know that these verses are nearest to my heart right now.  Help me cling to these verses to get me through this time apart, and trust in Your timing and plan.  Keep my faith strong in the words above, and don't let doubt cloud my thoughts.

I realize that not only do I need to focus on things I want, but things I should be thankful for.  And although it may be difficult I surely am thankful to have such a sweet, loving man to love even if that means there is a little bit of distance between us right now.  And until we together again these are just some of the verses I will be focusing on, memorizing, and praying with.

What is your favorite verse to pray for your significant other?  What is your favorite verse regarding love?  Did I miss any verses you think are incredibly important when praying for the man in my life?

Delicious Dish Tuesday [recipe] Link Up

Welcome to a new week of Delicious Dish Tuesday, where we share our recipes and ask you to share YOUR awesome recipes with us!  Last week we had some delicious looking recipes shared, I love finding all these new recipes to add to my "to-do" list.  This past week my favorite recipe was shared by Chelsea @ Girl Growing Up.

Cake Batter Truffle Bark

When I think of summer a couple images come to mind.

Orange Creamsicles.  Being Barefoot.  Beachin'.  Driving with the windows down, wind blowin' through my hair blastin' the perfect playlist.  And a ice cream cone from Marbleslab, Cake Batter to be specific.

Not to long ago Jillian @ A baJillian Recipes shared her recipe for a childhood favorite & summertime classic of mine -- Orange Supremecicle Cookies.  And now she's come through again with a twist on another summertime favorite of mine Cake Batter Truffle Bark.

Long Distance Taught Me...

I met my boyfriend my junior year of college, and we began dating right before summer break that year (read more of our story here).  We both graduated this past December, and have been loving from afar ever since.  Our two year anniversary is later this week, and so I thought I'd share what I've learned these past six months that we've been apart.

Long Distance Taught Me...

...that love knows no distance. have patience. not just go for what is more convenient.

...that home is where the heart is.

...that baking is much more fun when my best taste tester is in kitchen with me.  He's never met a dessert he didn't like & there will be less left over to tempt me.

...that communication is key.  And only texting doesn't cut it.

...that trust & honesty are the foundation of a solid relationship.  Without those two a relationship will not work long distance.

...driving 4 hours just to turn around and do it all again 2 days later is worth it.

...(speaking of driving) that I have odd road trip antics.

...God's timing is perfect.  Whether it is what we want at the time or not, God has a plan.  A plan to give us hope and a future, and we need to trust his timing.
...that to rely on each other for strength isn't only okay, but encouraged.  It's tough on both people in the relationship, not just yourself.

...he is worth it.

And when you've found someone that is worth the distance, and not seeing each other ever day knowing eventually you will everyday for the rest of your life.  Hold tight.

Being in a long distance relationship is hard.  It takes work.  Hard work.  And a strong commitment.  It's easy to give up and go for something convenient, but that doesn't mean it'll make you happier.  Many people will tell you that you're crazy for being in a long distance relationship.  But when you're meant to be you can find a way to make it work.  And it's totally worth it, so I'm told.

What is one thing a long distance relationship (of any kind) has taught you?  What is your best piece of relationship advice?  Have you been in a long distance relationship before?
