Eat Drink & Be Mary: Let Go & Let God: 20 Verses on Anxiety and Stress

Let Go & Let God: 20 Verses on Anxiety and Stress

 The other night I was reading on She Reads Truth, and I came across this quote.

“Christ is often nearer to us than we think he is.”
– Matthew Henry

How wonderful is it that our God is always with us, watching over us, and will never forsake us?!  I've mentioned before that I'm working on being patient with the Lord, His timing, and His plan for my life.  But my God is always there telling me to be patient and trust in Him.  And with learning to be patient and fully trust in Him comes anxiety and stress.
Buy this print here.

I'm anxious...
Anxious about what job I'll have in the fall, if I'll have a job at all.
Anxious of where the Lord will take Thomas and I's relationship as the year goes on.
Anxious of where my next move is.  To live on my own?  To stay living with my parents?  To moving closer to Thomas?  Can I handle the long-distance much longer, or is a move to another state in the making?

And I'm stressed...
Its a time for making new friends now that I've moved away from college and back home.
Or maybe renewing old friendships that I didn't maintain during my college years.
Do I get a summer job?
Or focus on getting a job in the fall?
If T and I both have jobs this summer, will we be able to visit each other?

So many ifs linger in my mind along with the many decisions that need to be made as I "grow up". --And by the way if you wanna know my opinion, growing up is for the birds.  I'll take coloring outside the lines, or even ditching college classes to lay out in the sun, over paying off student loans and job searching any day of the week; PLEASE!!

But back on topic with all this stress and anxiety filling my life, I must redirect my thudding heart to God and remember that He is in control.  And I know I'm not the only one who could use this reminder so here are 20 verses that help me deal with stress and anxiety.

Proverbs 3:5-6 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight."

Matthew 6:27 "And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?"

Romans 8:18 "The pain that you've been feeling, can't compare to the joy that's coming."

Proverbs 12:25 "Anxiety in a man's heart weighs him down but a good word makes him glad."

Psalm 62:8 "Trust in Him at all times, pour your hearts out to Him, for God is our refuge."

Matthew 6:34 "Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself."

Isaiah 35:4 "Say to those who have an anxious heart, 'Be strong; fear not!  Behold, your God will come with vengeance with the recompense of God.  He will come and save you."

Matthew 6:25-26 "Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on.  Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and you your heavenly Father feeds them.  Are you not of more value than they?

Romans 8:28 "And we know all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose."

Pslam 94:19 "When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy."

Philippians 4:6-7 "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be known to God.  7And the peace of God which suprasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

Matthew 10:19-20 "When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour.  20For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you."

Psalm 118:6 "The Lord is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?"

Isaiah 41:10 "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.  I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you a future and a hope."

Matthew 11:28-29 "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  29Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls."

Proverbs 31:25 "Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she smiles at the future." (NASB)

Deuteronomy 31:6 "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

1 Peter 5:7 "Cast all your anxiety on him because He cares for you."

Romans 12:12 "Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer."

  24. Thank you so much for this! Honestly, all of the stresses and anxieties are EXACTLY how I am feeling.
    Long distance, new graduate, needing a job, dealing with a summer job AND whether I'll be able to visit my beau, focusing on applying but yet debating on whether I moved out too early. Thank you so much. Honestly, I will probably come back to this so often this summer.

  25. Thanks for sharing this. It was right on time.

  26. Thanks for sharing this. It was right on time.

  27. Thank you for this post. It is much needed and will be used and reflected upon many times! God bless you!

  28. Psalm 46:10 Be still and know that I am God. I love your list! Thanks for sharing. I hope you don't mind if I share a little tip with you. It's something an English teacher taught me that has come in really handy. Whenever you are writing about yourself and another person and you aren't sure whether to use "I" or "me" or "my", just take out the name of the other person to see what sounds correct. For example, if you changed your phrase, "Thomas and I's relationship" to "Thomas's relationship" or "my relationship" you can hear that the possessive pronoun sounds correct. When you put both yourself and Thomas back together in the sentence, keep the same nouns: "Thomas's and my relationship." Does that make sense? Lots of people make that mistake because we are taught that it is polite to say, "Thomas and I" instead of "Me and Thomas." I seriously don't want to be a grammar Nazi, but thought you might find my little trick useful :)

  29. Excellent list of verses! Thanks for posting. I made a Fear and Fretting packet of verses years ago and having God's word in our hearts truly does keep us from sinning!
    1 Peter 5:6-7 is a favorite. Verse 6 begins with "Humble yourself, therefore...", because it is our pride that tries to handle difficult circumstances on our own. We have such a desire to fix things, forgetting God is in control of all our circumstances. But if we truly do humble ourselves before Him, He will exalt us at the proper time as we cast our anxieties on Him. He is a great God!

    1. Because He cares for us. Isn't that amazing? Ponder that for awhile and your anxiety should melt away!

  30. thank you. Great collection of verses. I'm going to art-journal all of them. :-)

  31. Psalm 143:8 (NASB) | In Context | Whole Chapter
    Let me hear Your lovingkindness in the morning;
    For I trust in You;
    Teach me the way in which I should walk;
    For to You I lift up my soul.

  32. My go-to verse is Psalms 46:10 Be still and know that I am God!
    I have to remind myself daily to slow down, stop worrying, and remember that God is on control and does all things for good.
    Love your blog by the way!

  33. Thank you for sharing! I'm a new(isn) teacher that has so much stress over where I will be in the next school year, moving, and where my life is headed. I have really benefitted from reading these verses!
